“Richard is real,” I tell Ink as I walk in my apartment door as the sun is rising. I am floating from another night of sensations I never thought my body could feel. “Ink, he is magic,” I laugh at how stupid that sounds. Of course, he is magic. He is a ghost.

Richard arrived in the theater as soon as Jake closed up the lights for the night, just as he had the night before. This time I could see him more clearly, with the house lights still lit, and a few stage lights remaining. He was in his thirties for sure, and his suit and hair was clearly from another time. When he saw me, he smiled, and his dimple showed again. It gave me butterflies. This time he took me out first.

“We flew above New York, looking at the lights and the people below,” I tell Ink, scooping him up to cuddle him close. “When we got back, I was dying to be near him. Every time I see him, I just crave him. I crave the feeling of him on my skin. He is warm and gentle, I never get quite enough of him. It is infuriating and intoxicating. My god, Ink, what am I going to do?” I let Ink drop down to the floor once more and close my eyes to remember the night. I wish it didn’t have to end. I remember I stepped close to him so that our molecules could blend. I wanted to show him that I understood what he said the other night. I can’t believe how eager I am to please him. But Richard put me off, he said he had to look around the theater. That’s when he told me that he was part of the cast that burned in the King’s Theater in the 1950s, and all of them are stuck here for the rest of eternity. It broke my heart when he told me. “I can’t imagine being chained to the place that killed you. He must be so sad, hey?” I ask Ink, half expecting a response.

I notice that the boxes I put as barricades around the air conditioning unit have been scratched up. Ink must have been trying to get out again. I drop my bag in the entrance and grab her some treats from the kitchen cupboard. She is weaving through my legs, and seems anxious and frustrated. I pet her head in a way I hope is soothing.

“I know it’s hard to not have the same freedom, and all the buddies you had on the farm Ink. But we only have another month and a bit left here, so try to enjoy it, okay.” The idea that I have so little time left in New York is like a sharp poke in the chest. I feel like I can’t breathe. My life here is just getting started.

I put a handful of kitty treats in my hand and replaced the box in the cupboard.
